Review: UK Family Holiday to Unity Beach in Somerset

We’ve found a UK family holiday park that genuinely ticks ALL the boxes!

As a mum of three, all aged five and under, finding a holiday destination that keeps everyone entertained, happy and, most importantly, makes family life a little easier is always at the top of my list. So when we discovered Unity Beach in Brean, Somerset, I honestly wondered why we hadn’t been before!

From the moment we arrived, it felt like this was somewhere that had really thought about families with young children. And I’m talking properly family friendly - from baby changing facilities and family changing rooms to soft play, splash pools, parks, entertainment, activities and plenty of places to eat.

In fact, you could quite happily spend your entire holiday without leaving the resort… although there are some brilliant adventures right on the doorstep too!

If you have little ones, book during Totally Tots Takeover

We visited during the Totally Tots Takeover, which is aimed specifically at under-fives, and I honestly couldn’t recommend it enough if you have younger children. It meant our little ones could enjoy the facilities and activities without feeling overwhelmed by bigger kids, and there was SO much for them to get involved with.

Our first stop was Unity Splash, and this was an instant hit. There’s a warm shallow splash pool, smaller slides for younger children and slightly bigger slides for those who are feeling brave. There’s also a large indoor pool and, when the weather is on your side, an outdoor Lido complete with a splash pad, flumes and sunshade cabanas. As a mum of three little ones, I loved that I could actually relax and enjoy being in the water with them. The facilities felt safe, clean and really well thought out for families.

And the practical bits matter too! There’s buggy parking, five baby changing tables and large family changing rooms with showers, so we could all get changed together.

Top tip: Check the adult-to-child ratios before you go in and take a £1 coin for the lockers - we needed two!

Unity Play is a soft play dream

If your children love soft play, you’re going to LOVE Unity Play.

There’s a dedicated area for babies with sensory activities, including a sensory water mat, while toddlers have slides, a mini trampoline, climbing areas and a moving carousel. And then there’s the gigantic under-the-sea-themed soft play for the bigger kids.

But the fun doesn’t stop there. Head upstairs and you’ll find the Ninja Warrior assault course - which I have to admit was much harder than I expected! The kids thought it was brilliant and it was a great way to burn off some energy.

Honestly, I could have happily left them here for hours!

Creative, messy and a little bit competitive…

There’s a fantastic range of activities to book through the app, including pottery painting, sand art, teddy bear making, arts and crafts and messy play.

We tried pottery painting at Unity Creative Studio, where Michael and Laura were fantastic with the children. They were so enthusiastic, giving them tips, helping them get started and cheering them on with their creations.

Top Tip: Don’t leave pottery painting until the last day. It’s takes 24 hours for the glaze to set before you take it home!

Then things got a little more competitive!

My two-year-old and five-year-old had a go at axe throwing, archery and mini crossbows. Before you panic - they’re all plastic and designed for little ones! Zoe was brilliant at showing them exactly what to do and became their biggest cheerleader whenever they hit the target.

The smiles said it all.

I may have found my daughter's new hobby…

One of my favourite surprises was discovering Baby Ballet ™

I’ve always wanted my daughter to try dancing but wasn’t sure which class would be right for her, so when I saw Baby Ballet ™ on the Unity Beach programme, I jumped at the chance.

The fully trained entertainment team ran a circus-themed session where the children learned to point their toes, gallop around, walk on a tightrope, juggle and dance to music.

They were SO proud of their stickers and hand stamps at the end and I’ve now been tasked with finding a local class for her!

And yes… the food deserves a mention!

Food is a BIG part of our holidays. I’ll happily cook a few nights when we need an early bedtime, but it’s my holiday too … and I love eating out!

During Totally Tots Takeover, Tots Eat Free at Wonky Donkey and RJs, which is a huge bonus when you’re feeding a family of five. There were all the family favourites on the menu: mac and cheese, fish and chips, chicken, chips and beans and we came away with very full bellies and very empty plates.

And if you’ve got little ones who love a sweet treat, don’t miss Kelly’s Ice Cream from the counters. There’s a huge choice of flavours and toppings, and the salted caramel with fudge pieces was a firm family favourite.

Meet the Adventure Gang!

You can’t visit Unity Beach without meeting the Adventure Gang.

There are lots of opportunities to see Tilly the Turtle, Skye the Seagull and Dudley the Donkey throughout your stay.

We headed to breakfast at Wonky Donkey, where the children could enjoy crafts with one of the characters while we tucked into waffles and a cooked breakfast. We made a Skye paper-bag puppet, which kept the children entertained while we enjoyed our food.

There are also Adventure Gang parades, evening shows and photo opportunities, so keep an eye on the app for the daily timetable. The entertainment team were fantastic - full of energy and brilliant at getting the children involved. We managed to squeeze in shows including Deep Sea Sensory, Nursery Rhymes, Tumble’s House, Dino-Mite and Tilly’s Baking Blunder, with different entertainment on throughout the week.

Top tip: Pack your holiday passes in your bag, you’ll need them for entry to RJs for the evening entertainment.
Parents, there’s something for you too!

And if you’re lucky enough to have a babysitter with you, there’s a surprisingly good amount of “me time” available too.

There’s a Unity Gym, golf, archery, axe throwing and rifle shooting, plus evening entertainment including live singing, pub quizzes and bingo. The site itself is huge, so it’s also lovely to simply get out for a walk and if you’re bringing the dog, they’re very welcome too, with a dedicated dog park and wash station.

Our caravan was a home from home

We stayed in a three-bedroom Platinum caravan and were genuinely impressed.

It was spacious, beautifully presented and had a gorgeous wrap-around balcony - perfect for sitting outside once the children were finally in bed! Inside, there was a really comfortable living and dining area and a fully equipped kitchen with everything we needed.

There were two twin bedrooms and a lovely double bedroom with an en-suite toilet, which worked brilliantly for our family. Everything was immaculate and clearly very well maintained. The beds were incredibly comfortable and the shower was powerful - which, after a full day of activities with three little ones, is exactly what you need!

If you have a touring caravan, there’s even an area onsite, making Unity Beach a great option for touring families too.

And then there’s the beach…

As much as there is to do onsite, we’re a family who loves getting out and exploring too.

Luckily, you don’t have to go far.

Berrow Beach is around a 15-minute walk away, and WOW - I wasn’t prepared for how enormous it is! It’s the perfect place for little ones to run, play and burn off even more energy, and the beach is full of beautiful coloured shells to collect.

Top tip: Walk down towards the car park and enter from there if you’ve got a buggy, as it’s much more buggy-friendly and definitely take a bucket for those shells!

There’s loads to explore nearby

If you fancy venturing further afield, there’s plenty to do around Brean.

* Wookey Hole Caves is around a 50-minute drive and makes a brilliant family day out, with the magical caves, adventure golf and soft play.

* Weston-super-Mare is only around 20 minutes away for a traditional British seaside day - think pier, arcades and, of course, fish and chips.

* We also stopped in Glastonbury on our way home, around 40 minutes away, and loved exploring the quirky shops, street art and independent cafés and restaurants.

There are plenty more ideas on the Unity Beach website, so you really can make your stay as action-packed or as relaxed as you like.

So, would we go back?

Absolutely!!

In fact, I’d happily book Unity Beach again just for Unity Play and Unity Splash!

For us, the biggest thing was how easy the whole experience felt. There was always something for the children to do, but it never felt like we had to constantly get in the car and organise another day out.

The staff were a huge part of that too. Everyone we met was welcoming, enthusiastic and genuinely brilliant with the children, which made us feel so well looked after.

We came home absolutely exhausted - in the best possible way - with happy children, full bellies and a camera roll full of memories.
