Review: Max and Ivy ‘Read and Play’ Box, worth £19.99

Review by VIP Club Member Amy Armstrong.

As soon as my four-year-old saw the box for Max and Ivy's Sports Day Kit, he was desperate for me to open it. Firstly, I was surprised by how much there was in the box in addition to the story book - bean bags, sacks for a sack race, plastic spoons and eggs and ankle ties for three - legged races. There's even a card suggesting different sports day games to play with the kit.

We sat and read the book, which is full of lovely illustrations and a great universal message of doing well but also being a good sportsperson and then had a go with the egg and spoons and the ankle ties for a three-legged race. My younger son (15 months) also joined in for a game of bean bag toss. We are going camping with our family soon and will definitely take this book and kit with us to enjoy with other children. It will also be a wonderful set to have for summer parties and play dates in the garden or at the park.

I particularly liked the size and shape of the spoons which make the egg and spoon race more accessible to younger children who are still developing their fine motor skills, but think the sacks in particular could be a little stronger - I'm not sure how long they will last with a small person in them in a race!

Overall, Max and Ivy's story book and sports day kit would make a lovely gift for young children, especially those just learning about their first sports day at school or nursery.
