Salt Dough Christmas Tree Ornaments

The perfect Christmas craft activity for children, these photo ornaments are simple to create and make great keepsakes that you will enjoy more and more each year.

Ingredients

* 1kg flour
* 250g salt
* 350ml warm water
* Ornament Cookie Cutter
* Acrylic Paint
* Glitter
* PVA Glue
* Gold Twine or string

Steps

  1. Preheat your oven to 120o C.
  2. Combine your flour, salt and water and mix. Knead for 5-10 minutes or until your dough is soft. Add extra water or flour if too dry or sticky.
  3. Roll out dough to about ½ cm thickness.
  4. Use cookie cutter to cut out shapes from your dough.
  5. Use a smaller circle cookie cutter to cut out the centre of your ornaments, then make a small hole for threading the twine/string (a straw is good for this).
  6. Bake for 2 hours in the oven or until dried through - larger ornaments will take longer. Save energy and reduce baking time by letting them air dry for a day before baking.
  7. Once cool, paint with acrylic paint. Leave to dry.
  8. Paint PVA glue on all sides of your ornament to seal it. Leave to dry. Use more PVA glue to stick glitter on top half to decorate as you wish.
  9. Cut out a photo to the same shape as your ornament, and glue it to the back so that the photo shows through your hole.
  10. Add your gold twine or string for hanging them on the tree.
