Review: Laura Candler Photography
Specialist Portrait Photographer

Our experience at Laura Candler’s photography studio was, surprisingly, a very pleasant one. The surprise came because Alice, who is 2 ½ years-old, doesn’t particularly like performing for the camera. She just doesn’t tend to smile when she has a lens pointing at her, and unfortunately is at that stage where she is not overly responsive to requests for her to do, well, anything really... especially when they are coming from a stranger. I like to think it is an example of her extreme intelligence, but even I am struggling to find a way to justify that claim!
Sophie on the other hand, who recently turned 1, is a veritable Cheshire Cat in the smiling department, which is a blessing, though I do often wonder how our children can be so different...
Laura is a mother of three herself, and this has probably helped her develop her easy manner with children, and her flexibility to adapt to their temperaments. She seemed to understand very quickly that asking Alice to behave was fairly futile, and she began taking pictures of the girls as they played and fooled around on the white backdrop. As Alice and Sophie became more comfortable, she experimented with some more posed positions which met with varying degrees of success, though Laura’s easy manner meant that she didn’t push it, so Alice didn’t get wound up if it looked like she wasn’t going to play along. Fortunately Laura has a quick trigger finger and an eye for a good shot which allowed her to catch some of the split-second moments when our family was all smiling at the same time and the result was a selection of photographs which we had trouble choosing between.

After the shoot, Laura spent about 20 minutes editting the pictures to present us with the long list of images to choose from. During the warmer months, families will take a wander around the farm and the countryside surrounding the studio at this point, though the chill was on during our visit, so we relaxed on a leather sofa and armchair and waited whilst the girls played with some toys and had a snack.
Laura then displayed the pictures on the wall of her reception area using a projector and we sifted through them until we had a short list of our favourites. We were then shown the price list to see if we wanted to buy

any extra prints, though there was never any pressure to do so and we had the option to decide then and there or to go away and think about it.
All in all it was a fun experience that the whole family enjoyed. It was virtually stress-free and we have some beautiful pictures to take away and display on our walls, which, let’s face it, is what it’s all about! If you are thinking of getting some portraits done of your family, children and/or pets (she can do those too apparently!) then I would definitely recommend that you put Laura Candler Photography on your list of photographers to consider.

I especially like the photo of the puppy in the atricle. Well done Laura,
you obviously have a real talent for photography - and a talent for making
small children smile!
